Avarai

I had received five Avarai seeds from Kala pinni in early Jan'26. Later in first week of july'26 i received fifteen Kozhi Kaal Avarai (Chicken Claw Hyacinth Bean) seeds from kovadi_Mohan.

I intend to use what's available in our garden as much as possible instead of buying.

2026 crop

I planted the seeds in the second half of August. I planted all the seeds given by Mohan and Kala pinni with 2 and 4 of them respectively in the balcony paint bucket. None of the seeds in the balcony germinated. Unsure if this is due to poor soil quality.

I planted all the remaining seeds in two clusters in the garden. Among the seeds planted in the garden, just three of the seeds from Mohan germinated. Two of them are in near house row between Avocado and Star Gooseberry. The third one is betwen the two coconut trees in the compound row.

I bought a cloth drying rod, 20m of thick plastic wires, known locally as stay wire and a pack of sutli, a much thinner nylon wire. I am making use of the pruned and discarded branches from the marudhani tree as stakes.

Created a net like structure using the three cloth drying rods with the latest arrival forming a triangle like structure for the two saplings here.

I have tied the plastic wires between the coconuts as a second net for other sapling.

Two tendrils from one of the two avarai sapling(A) in near house row has reached the net. The first tendril has been spreading for the past week and second tendril has started spreading for the past 3 days. A third tendril is now coming up to join the net.

The second sapling(B) in the near house row is still climbing the stake. The third sapling(C) in the compound row has reached the net today.

I decided to add sticks across the wires, to help avarai spread. My reasoning for doing this are as follows:

  • stakes are firmer than sutli, so might help the tendrils better
  • stakes might be better than nylon/plastic from heat perspective
  • adds more structural strength

For the past few days i've used the stakes from the pungai tree in front of the house. I added another iron pipe to provide additional support exactly opposite to the middle cloth drying rod.

I'm still unsure how this structure is going to withstand oncoming rainy season.

All the three plants are growing nicely. Except for the watering and regular weeding, i've not yet provided any nutrients. Need to add atleast some richer top soil either from under the guava tree or mango tree. I have to bring some top soil from the street near the TVS Garden. That street is fully shaded and has accumulated a lot of soil brought by rain water flow and also fertilized by the cows resting during the day time.

Greenwall

I thought of using Kodi avarai as greenwall in the first floot balcony instead of Shankhupushpam. Started the trial with a 20l paint bucket. Filled the bottom portion entirely with coco peat may be upto 70%. Then added garden soil to fill upto 90%. The bucket is now 85% full after multiple rounds of watering.

None of the the avarai seeds successfully germinated. I tried two different set of seads.
