Irrigation is an important issue as the Thenkodipakkam area is water scarce due to less rainfall with rock formation.

Openwell

Everyone in and around kodipakkam uses Openwell for irrigation. We have one functional well, one small well with damaged walls and a third one which is totally damaged.

The functional well total depth is 7.3m with water depth of 4.5m as on 2022-10-26.

Well dimensions

well dimensions determine water availability, as water needs to get collected from rock springs.

Diameter or diagonal of well - ranges from 5m to 15m Depth of well - ranges from 7m to 12m Outer wall - known as suthukinaru or vidivukarai is usually 1m to 2m wide goes all the way until firm rock formation occurs. Vidivukarai is secured with brick wall, granite wall, concrete wall. Concrete wall is done at rings of 1m costing30k for 15m diameter

Shape of well

Shape of well has an effect on cost and strength. A circular well takes lesser earth dug out, so cheaper

Formula= πr^2h vs s^2h for square well. So a 1m diameter circular well is 0.79 m^3 compared to 1 m^3 size.

Digging of well

Rate quoted by Arumugam chettiar on 2022-09-22 was ₹400 per kuzhi i.e 1m^3. On request he agreed for ₹300 for existing depth of 10ft. Current dimension 10*30*27 ft to be discounted.

Drip irrigation scheme

So decided to pursue Drip Irrigation scheme at the beginning itself. Based on guidance from Agriculture department staff Panchanathan the process was pursued.
