Note-taking skills
A note must capture the main idea of the text being studied. It must capture the information relevant to us either in word or as a diagram. Except for definitions, rephrasing in our own words makes it even more effective.
A consistent format for notes makes it easier to lookup and find key information like bibliography, main ideas and supporting ideas.
Reading Strategies
- Skim the text to identify the areas of your interest. Then read the specific section carefully and takes notes.
- In every section pay attention to opening and closing paragraphs that can provide an abstract or summary along with the accompanying tables/diagrams. Proceed to read only if you find it relevant to your requirement/interest.
- When reading text understand the organising principle, if any followed by the author. This will help you locate main and supporting ideas quicker. Notes must caputre all relevant information words, which are usually nouns, adjectives and verbs.
- Write down your own thoughts and ideas before and after reading in pre-defined areas of your notes.
Listening Strategies
- In addition to the reading strategies, prior preparation is vital for effective listening.
