LibreCAD

This document explains how to use LibreCAD in Linux . This tool was used to draw map of Thenkodipakkam land and to plan irrigation .

Starting to draw

A simple sequence of creating a basic drawing, from a blank document to a printed design.

How to copy entities from drawing A to drawing B?

https://dokuwiki.librecad.org/doku.php/usage:howto#how_to_copy_entities_from_drawing_a_to_drawing_b ↗

To copy some part of a drawing A and paste it in a drawing B. It is not difficult provided the user knows that both drawings must be opened in the same LibreCAD session.

The steps are :

  1. Launch LibreCAD.
  2. Open drawing A.
  3. Open drawing B without launching a second time LibreCAD.
  4. Go to drawing A window, select the green and red rectangles, click on Copy icon or press CTRL+C and define a reference point.
  5. Go to drawing B window, click on Paste icon or press CTRL+V and define a reference point. That’s it !

Changing an Object’s Layer

https://wiki.librecad.org/index.php/Layers ↗

Sometimes it is necessary to change an object’s layer. This describes how to move one or more objects between layers.

  1. From the menu select Modify->Attributes
  2. Select the objects you want to change the layer of. SeeSelectionsfor a detailed description of how to select objects
  3. Select the continue action button (double right arrow)
  4. In the Attributes dialog, drop down the Layer selection box and choose the desired layer.

Alternatively you can activate the option Application Preferences → Defaults → Modify layer of selected entities, at layer activation

With this option enabled you can move objects to a layer by selecting the objects and then selecting the destination layer.

How to import a map or any drawing

Using the concept of tracing an image, maps can be easily imported.

Yes, it can be done in LibreCAD to create a dxf file. Starting with a new drawing:

  1. Create a new layer and import the image (File -> Import -> Insert

image)

  1. Create another layer and use ‘Spline though points, arcs and lines to

trace the image.

Turning the image layer off and on will allow you to view and tune the drawing.

Once you have it imported, you will need to adjust the scale of the drawing to get it to 1:1, similar to the idea in this tutorial:https://wiki.librecad.org/index.php?title=Measure_Areas ↗

More information on using LibreCAD and the tools can be found in theUser Manual.

This is a quick example using the image you provided:

Change the scale

My example -using the scale tool

  1. Draw rectangle 60 x 40.

  2. Select rectangle by either -drag window around rectangle, Ctrl A or

using the ‘Select’ toolbar (docked on right hand side).

  1. Once selected, go to Modify > Scale.

  2. Now just press return key > Specify reference point.

  3. Choose reference point and ‘Scaling’ options dialog window will open.

  4. Set the option fields

Note at this point the options to use current attributes (line weight, color, type etc.) and current layer.

You need to check these boxes if you need to keep these the same!

  1. In my example I have set to scale up

X2.
